Halloween drives footfall increase in October
Average footfall was up by 4.5 per cent compared to September.

Halloween and the half-term holidays spelled good news for UK retailers as footfall leapt by 18.3 per cent in the last week of October, making it the busiest shopping week of the year, with 3.5per cent more shoppers than in the previous busiest week, at the end of July.

According to global retail and footfall consultancy Ipsos Retail Performance, which compiles the Retail Traffic Index (RTI) derived from the number of individual shoppers entering over 4000 non-food retail stores across the UK, average weekly footfall for the month as a whole was up by 4.5 per cent compared to September, although this figure was 2 per cent lower against the same period last year. Despite the busy final week, footfall during the first three weeks of October was sluggish.

“October is usually a pretty placid month, as consumers start putting aside some spare cash for Christmas rather than spending it freely in the shops. Store footfall levels were definitely flat and muted over the first three weeks of the month, but the final one blew the tumbleweed away,” says Dr Tim Denison, director of retail intelligence at Ipsos.

Shops in The North of England saw the sharpest climb in footfall at 7.8per cent compared to September. Scotland and Northern Ireland also benefitted from a 4.4 per cent increase, followed by The Southwest and Wales with 4.1 per cent. The South East and London lagged behind other regions but still reported a rise of 2.8 per cent.
