Olympics and online aid strong John Lewis growth
Department store group sees 12.8 per cent overall sales increase in first half of 2012.

13 September 2012

John Lewis has reported strong sales through the first half of 2012, with a 12.8 per cent increase to £1.6bn, while like-for-like sales grew by 9.2 per cent.

Fashion sales saw a growth of 7.2 per cent, with events such as the Diamond Jubilee helping drive sales further.

John Lewis’ role as the Official Department Store of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games also had a positive effect in the run-up to the games.

The John Lewis brand continues to be strengthened through its designer collaborations with designers such as Alice Temperley, which has experienced positive results since its official launch last month.

Johnlewis.com, meanwhile, is citied as a “significant contributor” to the encouraging first half of 2012, with online sales growing by over 40 per cent and now accounting for 24 per cent of total John Lewis sales.

The store’s Click and Collect scheme proved to be a popular option for many consumers, growing by 114 per cent year-on-year.

Next month will see the group open a new store in Exeter, with a John Lewis pop-up shop trading on the main high street six weeks prior to opening to give shoppers a preview of its product range.
