With just one week to go until the launch of Independent Retailer Month 2013, British shoppers are being urged to get behind their local businesses by buying independent. Spearheaded by retail guru Clare Rayner, Independent Retail Month is now in its third year, and will once again see communities across the country organise promotions, family days and special events to celebrate the vibrant retail scenes within their local communities.
“There are some 192,000 independent businesses in the UK occupying almost 250,000 shops and the more who take part in Independent Retailer Month, the stronger they will become,” says Rayner. “Now in its third year, this campaign could not be more important – only last month it was revealed that the number of empty shops across the UK has hit an all-time high and the only way to stem further closures is for retailers to be pro-active and not only remind local customers to the fact that they’re here, but to give them more reasons to visit.”
Events already organised for this year’s campaign include a prize draw in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire for customers producing receipts for purchases from two independent stores, a shopping crawl in Letchworth, Hertfordshire and street performances in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.
“This year I am urging shoppers to divert up to 20 per cent of what they currently spend out of town, in chains, or with online giants, to their local, independent retailers; be it the local delicatessen or a boutique, a sweet shop or a hardware store,” says Rayner. “Residents are the first to complain about empty shops in their local centre, so if they really do care about having thriving local businesses then they need to ensure that they put their money where their mouth is, and actually spend with them.”
